crainiac, sorry, I think you are reading this incorrectly. They did not buy any.
20,393,450 is total of common and warrants they own:
Amount Beneficially Owned: Messrs. Marxe and Greenhouse
beneficially own a total of 9,828,250 shares of Common Stock and 10,565,200
Warrants to purchase common shares.
This filing is based on Dec 31st.
They've been selling large quantites for months, and reflects exact number since the last sale of 535,000 shares on December 13th to bring total of 9,828,250 shares

MARXE AUSTIN W & GREENHOUSE DAVID M was the major drag on the shares for months, because of consistent selling. They've done selling in December though...
