And the cerium just keeps coming

cerium and lanth are mcp's two chief products

'Prices of cerium oxide have been on a prolonged slide since last year when they hit levels of $150/kg – the latest price suggests they’re in the region of $17-20/kg and despite a pick-up in demand there always seems to be plenty of it around with more to come. Traders reckon it could go lower still and one thought $10/kg is possible this year.

Indeed, some industry sources are almost comparing cerium and lanthanum (last heard at roughly $30/kg, but looking bearish) as an annoying by-product of making more profitable heavy rare earths, what to do with all this stuff? That’s an exaggeration – as both do have uses – but constant price drops must bring into question the viability of some of the many projects out there, which rely heavily on light rare earths to be profitable.'
