Challenging the hegemony of the dollar might be the biggest mistake China could make. Look at the money the US spent/ is spending maintaining that position. China has some huge problems; a billion people who aren't participating in the economic growth of the east coast, a huge aging population, the economy is managed through unpopular price controls and currency devaluation. And the environment has been destroyed, maybe irretrievably, to get to where they stand now. In May my son, just out of school with a BS in Econ/Math is headed to Beijing for a year to teach English. China just opened the Petrol Yuan this week where China is buying oil in chinese yuan instead of the us dollar if they can get it where they can purchase all there oil imports with there own currency all of a sudden they dont need all those us dollars or nearly as many.
