DSL is generally cheaper but the cheapest and free would be to hop on your neighbor's unprotected wi-fi. Otherwise, maybe arrange a deal to share the DSL/cable via wi-fi with a neighbor?

You can also get a Magicjack ( http://www.magicjack.com ) if you want to keep a 'landline' for cheap. I think it's 25 bucks a year for unlimnited US and Canada calls.

I still use Vonage, but I have a virtual Montreal number for my wife's family to call us without having to pay long distance.

PS on advice of a friend I called to cancel Vonage, they offered no discount. Next morning they emailed me an offer to come back, incentive was two free months and I kept my same numbers ;)

Practically nowdays if you make the calls, anything could be bargained down, success with cable, satellite, telephone, dsl, wireless phones, home insurance, car insurance, even health insurance. If you do this right (takes you no more than 30 mins total), you can save some $2K to $5K a year (20% to 30%) depending on your own annual budgets. Just tell these reps over the phone that the economy stinks and perhaps you can't keep these services much longer.

No luck with gas electricity water and waste collectors.

If you go retail shops like starbucks or peetes, they have buy 1 get 1 free most of the time, and if you are getting a few drinks (for you and your family), try to go for the biggest cup and ask them to divide up the drink into multiple cups, instant save about 30%. Always think of creative ways to save cuz afterall it makes you a smarter shopper and money manager, and if you are in business, that's your bottomline! Bottomline is being frugal is smart, being cheap is stupid, and being an overspender is moronic.

"Land lines are still nice for emergency and guests. But I do agree they are definitely not getting their uses to justify the bill."

Yes, landlines are still good specially during emergencies, maybe to lower the telephone bill try to change the rate to metered instead of flat rate.

The best way to get a good deal out of the cable provider is to tell them that you are leaving to their direct competitor. There are door to door offers that are far superior to any advertisements on the internet, tv, or by calling into them. Of course I can only attest this being true with Comcast and Verizon FIOS.

Re: Reduce your monthly bills - cable, satellite, phone (offline, landline) gas

only problem with getting your home reduction is if you want to sell, people look at the value online and it can seriously impact the selling price.
