I live near a big tourist area and it's just the opposite here. Tourist numbers are way down, lots of small businesses closed and numerous homes for sale, that have been for sale for 1-3 years. I counted seven homes totally abandoned this afternoon as I drove to the post office.
But, me personally, I'm doing better financially than I ever have. Not getting rich but am doing ok. I'm a firm believer in the so called "American Dream", where if you work hard you can be successful. And even though I currently own my home I'm ready to get out and find something smaller. Looking to rent something a lot smaller. I'm learning as I get a little older that acquiring 'stuff' doesn't make me happy. The less I have to take care of and worry about, the better I'll be.

here are the keys
1. the people who DO have jobs...they only paused temporarily in their spending habits..say mid 2008 to late 2009
those people who delayed lots of purchases ended up buying more stuff last few years. its proven that no matter what your income level is, people end up spending any extra money they make
2. lots of these kids graduating are living with parents and saving money on rent for several years. they technically have excess money to spend on stupid crap like bad food at these restaurants, movies, music, iPads, etc than they might have 10 years ago when it was assumed you moved out and went on your own a lot quicker
3. Lots of people have been living on the dole as well and didn't take AS HUGE a hit financially as some might believe, especially if they STOPPED paying their mortgage.. and if at least they were married and one spouse was working . maybe they started a small business using the free UE benefits along the way too
4. Corporate America has come out on top because of all the subsidies put in, the stimulus, and the free money from the fed. The people working for these companies or BIG government jobs like in the medical industry haven't felt much i gather.
the question is will it end up showing up as it ends? some think it is about now. how about them NIKES? can you imagine if rates ever did rise at this point with all the debt out there?
5. Lots of baby boomers have inherited money from the Greatest Generation. the asset wealth might be getting them by as they are in more liquidation mode with that money, let alone what they accumulated as workers over the decades.
6. I agree..ever SINCE the financial crisis ended with tarp, etc in SUmmer 2009, there seems to be a steady stream of excess drivers, traffic, etc vs years before. it has do something with all of these points. I don't live in an area that is having loads of people move into...and yet sometimes feels like it
