The Tesla is very cool IMO but I seriously doubt that we will EVER get fully away from dependence on oil. I think living sustainably is a worthy pursuit but I also reconize the finite nature of our planet and resources as well as the external pressures exerted by large corporations, even in light of the new green movement. GE seems to be among the main purveyors of so called clean techology (i.e. wind power) and I have even seen a renewed interest in alternative energy harnessing such as wave power but underneath it all I am certain still lies people whose priorites rank monetary capitalization on new technology above genuine sustainability. We live in a world of built in obsolesce and the cash for clunkers program appears to potentially be an example of this despite the green brush with which it is being painted.

I think that they are doing this in order to pave the way for newer, more efficient cars. I don't think that this is the right thing to do personally. It's probably the government's way of getting rid of vehicles that give off more pollutants. Just another waste of taxpayers' money. I had a friend at work tell me about a car that's only being made in Southern California right now, called an Aptera. My wife thinks it's ugly, but I look at it as a huge savings in gas. Maybe I'll own one when I'm a little older, and when they're a little more popular (and cheaper).
