the 70's was an industrial economy - companies had high demand for their products - so they were willing to pay big bucks for talented people.
Now in our "service economy' - a lot is "dumbed down" - so they don't really need that many good people anymore - just the few at the top - the rest "peons"
With having said - one can make any argument they want -
